Indigenous Artist Benjamin Chee Chee: Canada Goose Art Project

Truth and Reconciliation Day, observed on September 30, is a day for Canadians to reflect on the history and lasting impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous Peoples. In schools, it is often marked with learning activities that emphasize the importance of listening to survivors’ stories, acknowledging past harms, and committing to building respectful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Students may wear orange shirts to honour survivors and those who never returned. The day focuses on raising awareness, fostering empathy, and encouraging ongoing action toward reconciliation.

In my Grade 10 homeroom, we explored the work of Benjamin Chee Chee, an Ojibwe artist from Temagami, Ontario, known for his graceful line drawings of birds and animals that reflect his connection to nature. After learning about his life and contributions to Canadian art, students tried to recreate one of his elegant Canada goose pieces using Sharpies and pencil crayons, which gave them a hands-on way to appreciate his style and artistic voice.

Looking at his work, I was mesmerized by the simplicity, the gracefulness and flow.

I was inspired by THIS lesson on the Runde's Room website.

Grade 10 students used their laptops to look up images of Chee Chee's work. They copied one of his geese onto cardstock in pencil. Then they traced over the lines with sharpies.

Some finished artworks- my kids really enjoyed this project, even the 'non-artists' were really happy with their drawings!

Animals in Sweaters Art Project

Here's a wonderful winter lesson teaching students about implied texture through use of lines.
It also teaches pattern. I taught this to Grade 4-6 classes.
I used ideas for this project from the lessons posted HERE and HERE.
I do believe the originator of this project (there are various versions posted online, with no attribution given, as usual) by Art Room Britt.

I started off by showing a slideshow of the animal work by Mexican illustrator and graphic designer Indi Maverick. Then I did a demonstration.
Students chose their animal from handouts I had. Racoons and deer were BY FAR the most popular.

They drew their animals on tabloid photocopy paper, then did all the line work in sharpie.

They coloured in the sweater only.

We created a frame for the artwork using kraft paper.
They drew a pattern along the edges using paint pens.

Some of the finished artwork- I love how cute and cozy they turned out!

Russian Matryoshka Doll Drawings

This was a lesson I left for my substitute teacher when I was out sick. It's the perfect sub lesson as it only uses markers, but also allows for a lot of creativity and engagement from students.

See my previous post about this lesson HERE. It has all the steps.

Find the doll template HERE.

Black & White Doodle Design with Pop of Colour

This is a project I first blogged about back in 2011. I've taught it once more since then, but now keep this art project in my sub folder in case I'm sick and require a substitute teacher. It only uses markers and paper so it's a perfect lesson to leave.

See all the steps posted HERE.
I found the original lesson HERE.
