Compass Rose Magazine Collage

 

This collage project was a really good freebie I found HERE. 

This is a great lesson for when you need Substitute Teacher like I did last week. 

The project is simple enough for someone not trained in Art to teach, yet engaging enough to keep the kids interested and working the entire class. 

It also reinforces good cutting and gluing skills.

I left this lesson for both my Grade 4-6 class as well as my Grade 7-9 class.

You simply need old magazines, scissors, Sharpies and glue sticks.

Rainbow Words of Gratitude

I love this project for the beginning of the year- it's a fairly straightforward project which gives wonderfully colorful results. You can also get a good idea of each students level if you have new students. I call these "Rainbow Words of Gratitude" but you could change the theme of the words to anything you want. Students' names, favourite subjects, etc. You could also teach colour theory with this lesson- having students choose warm or cool colours, analagous colours or complementary colours. So many possibilities.

I found the lesson on the Incredible Art Department website HERE and modified it a tad.

Students in Grades 4 - 6 had to think of something they were grateful for in their lives. They folded a sheet of 8.5 x 14" (legal sized photocopy paper) paper in half horizontally. They printed the word nice and large on the paper then outlined it using a black marker. Do this step nice and bold.  

Then they chose colours they wanted to use around the word. 

Trace around each letter with one colour, then move on to the next colour 

until there is no white space left.

You simply need old magazines, scissors, Sharpies and glue sticks.

The link above gives you a template to print off. Kids cut one of each out and trace it onto interesting looking magazine papers. I encouraged them to keep the rose compass symmetrical for a more cohesive look, but many did not and I ended up not minding the mismatched ones. 

   

Careful cutting and gluing is essential for all the pieces to line up accurately.

Once they were were all glued and dried, I laminated all of them as they were quite delicate and thin, being made of only magazine paper.
