Jim Dine 4 Hearts Art Project

Here's another fast and easy Valentine's art project with an art history component. 

I saw this on an Instagram reel from @scholtenart. I altered the last time a bit.

This was the first project I did with a new set of Grade 4-6 students. Honestly, it was easy for alot of the older kids, but the boys, especially, needed help and reminders with cutting and gluing and all those fine motor skills that boys sadly seem to lack compared to girls. This took my classes one 40 minute period to complete. 

This is the first year I've tries tempera paint sticks and they are fantastic! It's like drawing with a really slick, smooth, colorful glue stick!

I pre-cut heavy white paper into squares (9" x 9") and then pre-cut coloured photocopy paper into squares that would fit onto that in 4th (I can't really explain math, lol)

Students covered the white paper with patterns using paint sticks.

Then they chose two squares of a colour, stacked them and cut out a heart shape. 

Review positive and negative space.

Glue stick these onto the background like so. Then we used black and white pencil crayons to add some shading and highlights to the hearts. 

I love how fun and colourful these turned out!

 

Jim Dine Inspired Hearts

This was a fast and furious 40 minute period lesson!

It's great for discussing both line, pattern and colour.

We first looked at the heart paintings by Pop artist Jim Dine.

Grade 4-6 students used tempera paint sticks to create a colourful patterned background 

on 9 x 12" white paper. Then they created a heart template from folded scrap paper. They traced this onto their background, outlined it using black oil pastels, and blended it for shading. I love how these turned out!

 

Pop Art Hearts Mixed Media

This is a fun and colourful project that I found on Instagram HERE on the art teacher account by Lauralee Chambers. Her photo was so whimsical and happy I knew I had to try the lesson.

We used bleeding art tissue- they type that dissolves its colour when wet. It can be tricky to find 

where I live so I order it online. 

So Grade 5 students chose their colours for the background and cut the tissue paper into large squares. I had pre-cut heavy white paper into squares. They wet the paper, lay down a tissue square then let dry and peeled them off at the end of class. This easily took one 40 minute period- some kids didn't even finish. I have to say that these were absolutely gorgeous on their own!! Once dry, though, I found the colours faded a bit and were lighter.

The next class, students folded a scrap sheet of copy paper in half and cut out a heart, making sure it was large enough to fill a good chunk of the background paper (we talk about focal point here). 

They trace their heart template onto the background paper and paint it with tempera. Some mixed in glitter glue for extra sparkle. 

Once dry, students added a chunky white highlight using chalk. Fun!

Painted Heart Weaving

This is a fun but time consuming lesson- great for Valentine's Day.
I was inspired by the super cool lesson found here on the
Los Cerros Middle School art page in California.


I showed samples of American Pop artist Jim Dine's Heart series for an art history tie-in.

Paint the same heart (draw one and then trace it onto another sheet of paper the same size) in contrasting colors on two sheets of paper. Then weave the two hearts together!

Sheet #1 (about 16x20")

Sheet #2- same hearts, contrasting colours

Woven together- ta da!

Here's another example (with glitter)

Fold one sheet in half and cut about 1" strips up to the top but not all the way through- leave a 1" space along the top. This is the 'warp'.

Cut the other sheet into 'weft' strips. Then weave them into the other sheet.

Glue the edges on the back so it's all secure.

Ta da!
