Creative 3D Christmas Tree art project

This was a 'extra time' project for any early finishers in my high school class during December. 

My former colleague is a master weaver and a wonderfully creative person! (The Wandering Weaver) 

She donated her sturdy cardboard weaving/yarn cones to me and I figured at some point they'd make a cool evergreen project or ice cream cone paper mache project, lol.

Students were challenged to think outside the box, use any material in the art studio and create their own tree. All three went with green, haha. 

I love how they all came out!!

 

Oil Pastel Sgraffito Ornaments

This is a colourful project my Grade 4/5 class just finished up last week. 

I was inspired by THIS VIDEO by Mari from Finland. She is SO SO talented and her Finnish accent is so relaxing to listen to!

I printed out a sheet of various shaped ornaments. Students learned about the sgraffito technique (an art technique where you scratch through a top layer of colored coating  to reveal a different colored layer underneath). They coloured each ornament with a light coloured oil pastel first. Then they layered on a darker colour. Using a wooden skewer, they scratched out different patterns.

They created a background on black paper- they did either ribbons with bows or evergreen boughs. Most went with evergreen boughs! Cut out the ornaments and glue stick them onto the black paper.

 

3D Paper Snowman

These were all created using coloured photocopy paper. Perfect to use up any scraps you have lying around from past projects. Our students LOVED taking these home!!

 

Van Gogh Starry Night Snowglobes

This is a wonderful December lesson that incoprorates the holiday season as well as an art history component with Van Gogh's Starry Night painting.

I found this lesson HERE on the Painted Paper website. 

For the villages, we used these amazing village drawing booklets found HERE on the art blog Art with Mrs. E.  Totally worth the money and I am CHEAP, so you know it's good.

I pre-traced a large circle on heavy white 9 x 12" paper.  Grade 4-6 students looked at Van Gogh's "Starry Night" painting and drew their own village. It could anything they wanted. They added swirls in the sky to mimic his style. They also drew their own base for the snow globe.

They outlined everything in Sharpie.

Then coloured using pencil crayons. Some painted the sky with watercolours. 

Once dry, cut out.
