Picasso's Rooster Art Project

 

Grade 4 students made these funky roosters inspired by Pablo Picasso's 

pastel drawing of a rooster, seen below.

I was inspired by the post found HERE on the blog "A Glimmer of Light". 

We used construction paper crayons on brown construction paper. Afterwards, I decided that oil pastels would be more effective as they are much brighter. Construction paper crayons tend to be very subdued.

This is a great lesson in teaching expressive use of colour and line and creating mood in an artwork.

Frankenstein Kids

I think this is such a cute Halloween project. I used to teach it to Grade 3 back when I taught that grade. I decided to bring it back for a fun Halloween project for my Grades 4-6 students this year. 

I saw the lesson originally posted HERE on the blog "ARTventurous".

They sketched out their Frankenstein kid on white paper. Then outlined with a Sharpie. 

They coloured them in with construction paper crayons. 

They outlined the entire image with a yellow wax crayon and created some electricity bolts. 

Finally, they painted the background with liquid watercolours.

I love how cutely scary these are!

 

Bunnies in the Grass Drawings

I've been getting ready this week to attend the 2018 NAEA National Convention for the first time in my career! I'll be flying in from Canada, so pretty excited, plus I love Seattle. If any Art teachers out there have any advice/tips for a first time attendee, please leave them in the comments below :)

It's exhausting making sub plans for three days!!

So this is a cute Spring project my Grade 2's made last year. 

I found the lesson on HERE on the blog "The Art Teacher's Closest". 

I demonstrated the drawing steps on the whiteboard, then passed out construction paper.

Students drew their design first in pencil.

Then they outlined everything using a black wax crayon.

I gave them the option of either colouring their bunny with construction paper crayons, 

or using white tempera. 

I think they turned out pretty cute: )

Scarecrow Illustrations

Here are some adorable scarecrow illustrations made by my Grade 2's. The goal was to have them add as many details as possible- to show them that details add interest to a work of art. We want the picture to tell a story and we want the viewer to spend time looking at their artwork. 

We started off by looking at photos of actual scarecrow and noting the different types of detail on them (patches, plaid shirt, old, ratty clothing, some type of hat, straw, etc). 

They drew these on 12x18" pale blue construction paper. Then they outlined them in Sharpie and finally coloured them using construction paper crayons.

All in all, this took about 4- 40 minute periods.
