Wax Crayon Batik Style Pumpkins

 

Wax Crayon Batik- one of my favourite techniques to use with students- it creates a really cool texture and kids get a big kick out of crumpling up their artwork!

Tips: use thin copy paper

Press hard with wax crayons, use lighter colours

Crumple and flatten paper three times

Use ink consistency acrylic or dark watercolour

Scratch Art

Good old classic Scratch Art!  Mess free, fun to do, pretty results!

I ordered a pack of both rainbow and solid coloured scratch art paper. They come with sticks to scratch with but my perfectionist students said they were "too dull" so made their own by taping a thumbtack onto the end of a pencil. We also used bamboo sticks which have a really fine wood tip. 

                                                          

Students draw their design first on copy paper, tape it onto the scratch paper and trace over all the lines with a ballpoint pen. This will transfer grey lines onto the scratch paper. Then they scratch away with their chosen tool. For this project I left the subject matter completely up to students- I like this lesson for the end of the year or right before a holiday as it's simple yet fun and keeps the kids engaged.

"What Makes you Scream?" Art Project

This is a fantastic project for Halloween- it's inspired by the 

famous Edvard Munch painting :"The Scream". 

I found the initial project inspiration HERE on the KinderArt website. 

I gave Grade 7 - 9 students background information on "The Scream" and some background biographical info on Munch. 

I left the choice of media completely up to students- they just needed to include the scream figure somehow and include what they are afraid of.  I loved the variety of images that came from this creative project! Some results below:

 

Whimsical Haunted House Drawings

These are some whimsical haunted houses my mixed Grade 4 - 6 students completed last year.

I found the lesson HERE on the blog "Color it like you mean it!".

Students started by sketching their drawing in pencil on black paper then went over it with white coloured pencil (we call them pencil crayons in Canada!).  I highly recommend using Prismacolour for this project as the quality is so much richer. I'm also a fan of Crayola Twistables.
