Van Gogh "Almond Blossoms" Painting

Almond Blossoms is a group of several paintings made in 1888 and 1890 by Vincent van Gogh in Arles and Saint-Rémy, southern France of blossoming almond trees. Flowering trees were special to van Gogh. They represented awakening and hope. He enjoyed them aesthetically and found joy in painting flowering trees. The works reflect the influence of Impressionism and Japanese woodcuts. Almond Blossom was made to celebrate the birth of his nephew and namesake.

I saw the original painting in the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam years ago. It is one of my all time favourite paintings (turquoise is my favourite colour!) I bought a poster at the gift shop but it got lost in the mail shipping it home and I have never gotten over that!!

This project was inspired by the brilliant Art teacher Lauralee Chambers @2art.chambers.

Grade 4 - 6 students started by looking at and discussing the painting. We noted the bright background, the gnarly way the branches are painted and the look of texture.

They had handouts of the painting and first painted a bunch of overlapping branches on turquoise construction paper using tempera paint.

Then they outlined the branches using their choice of brown tempera paint or a brown coloured pencil.

They added curved lines on the branches for texture and to give a sense of form.

Finally, small blossoms were painted on the branches.

A beautiful Spring display!!
